We are open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Other hours, for veteran or student groups, are available by appointment. Admission is $5 per adult, $4 for seniors, and $3 for students under 18.
During
a part of World War II, musicians were on
strike, and there were no new phonograph
recordings being made. However, the
musicians agreed to support the troops.
Some 900 78 rpm records were produced between
1942 and 1949 and distributed to the
troops. The Museum is fortunate to have
an example of such a distribution, which is
described here.
The
Museum has recently acquired a 1960s vintage
Link Trainer. This is a stationary
"Nav/Comm Simulator" designed to
practice instrument navigation. The unit
appears to be complete, but requires assembly
and checkout. Anyone qualified to
maintain or operate this unit is invited to
come by and discuss putting it back into
operation.
We have recently added displays of representative uniforms from all services. Although we have a good selection of basic uniforms, we are short of proper shirts, ties, shoulder boards, and similar accessories. If anyone has any of these small items, we would appreciate a donation.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our corporate and organizational sponsors who have provided cash and in-kind donations to aid us in developing our displays and restoring military
artifacts.
We
are asked from time to time about movies
relating to World War II. Although there
have been some recent movies relating to the
War, the vintage movies below portray true
history:
- Tora,Tora,Tora - The Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor
- Midway - The turning point of
the war in the Pacific
- The Longest Day - The D-day
landings in Normandy
- 12 O'clock High - The air war
over Germany
We
want to thank Dave Troutman for preparing
and painting the UH-1 Huey on display by the
Museum front gate. Dave has expressed
interest in painting the TF9J Cougar, and
would accept some assistance. Contact
the Museum if you would like to help with
this project.
The Veterans' Memorial Museum welcomes the
participation of military and veterans' groups and individuals in making the Museum a
valued educational and memorial attraction in North Alabama. If you would like to
volunteer exhibits, sponsorship, time, or funds, please contact us. We have a
particular need for volunteers to sponsor vehicles and wall displays.
Remember, we are an all-volunteer organization. We have no paid
staff, receive no appropriated funds and depend completely on volunteer support. Any donations of your time, memorabilia,
building improvements, or funds go directly toward making the Museum an asset to the City
of Huntsville and the State of Alabama. We are normally open
Monday-Saturday 8-4 for
development of exhibits. We have an immediate need for volunteers:
- To assist in restoration of several armored
vehicles and aircraft
- To do a couple of days of licensed plumbing
